Libs asks what she can grow in her living room, which is too dark for most houseplants, so Libs .... this article is for YOU!
Think you can't grow houseplants because you don't have enough light inside? These plants thrive in low light:

Peace lily (Spathiphyllum)
# Peace lily (Spathiphyllum) has fragrant white flowers similar to those of the calla lily; its foliage is clean and rich green.
# Devil's ivy (Pothos) is useful for softening up almost any area. Place it on a ledge or on top of a bookcase and let its long, cascading stems gently spill over the side.
Mother-in-law's tongue (Sansevieria)
# Snake plant, or mother-in-law's tongue (Sansevieria), has an upright growth habit and variegated foliage for an extra punch of color. The structural leaves are tall, long and narrow, resembling several snakes in one pot.
Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema)
# Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema) is an excellent plant prized for its bushy habit and variegated look. An added advantage: this plant loves to be pot-bound, so you don't have to worry about repotting it every year.
With all of these plants, it's very important to "neglect with respect." In other words, don't over-water. This is especially important in low-light conditions. Water only when the plants are dry; fertilize about once a month but only during the growing season.

Dr. Leonard Perry, Extension Professor says :
If you have low light conditions in your home, then try Chinese Evergreen, Rubber Plant, Snake Plant, or Peace Lily. Although these plants all have different light requirements, they will readily adapt to low light conditions. In addition, they are generally tough, with low maintenance needs.
The University of Illinois provides this list:

I love that photo of the Peace Lily. I like the fact you don't have to water it all the time.

Anyone can have the facts, but having opinions is an art.
Wonderful post. I was wondering what to put in my living room window. It is a dark window with not a lot of light, now I know. Hey, by any chance do you have any ideas how to get rid of caterpillars? I have them attacking my mini roses, my gerbera daisies, and my sunflowers. They look so sad.
5I love this post and group. I just subscribed to the group. Thanks for making it, Schaianne.
6Thanks for the info. I need to get soem plants in my house.
7Thanks a lot, BB! Feedback like that makes me feel all warm and squishy inside, hehe.
8I have a big fat peace lily and a few times I would forget to water it and it would droop all sad and I would water it and it would spring up like new before the day was over....one day when I'm good and bored, I'm gonna watch for hours...wonder if it would go too slow for me to see it spring back up? eh..probably....I also have the kind of houseplant that grows reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeal long and I put little tiny nails to hold the stems along my wall, very pretty!
9Thank you for this article, Schaianne.
I have a peace lilly at my office (that I rescued after a co-worker abandoned it when he took a other job). I'm happy to report that now, several years later, it's thriving.
