Every fall I think I'm going to find time to plant some bulbs which would make me ever so thrilled come spring when the flowers pop up. But no. So what's this I hear about summer bulbs? You can plant bulbs in spring that will bloom in summer!?!? What a concept! But does it really pay off?
Have any of you ever planted gladiolus, dahlia, calla lily, caladium, crocosmia, agapanthus or tuberose bulbs in spring? Any tips you can share with me?
Panache
I planted glades last year, but learned i need to stagger the planting of then this year so they last longer.
1Interesting, do you mean you plant a group one week and then wait a week to plant more? Is that staggering?
2yes, this way you have blooms from july to sept.
3That is so cool! Thanks for the tip Mandy.
4Honestly, I've always planted my bulbs in Fall ... but I've heard quite a few people have had success with summer bulbs. I do not know for sure - but I think I heard you just have to water them pretty faithfully until they take off - just like any other newly planted flower. I hope you have GREAT success!!
Share pics with us when they come up!!
5I'm not sure where you are but the thing with spring bulbs is you have to dig them up in the fall.
6I did not know that, Mandy - I'm glad I've never messed with them, then - I stick with perennials I do not have to mess with on a yearly basis.
7I but them where my tulips are, is it not that much work. i dig them up after they die back to keep them from rotting in the ground.
8I suppose - but for me, stick 'em in once and leave 'em until they need thinning is preferred!
